The formation of the Indian National Congress was the brain-child of Allan Octavian Hume, who is also known as the architect of
this national organisation. The Congress Party has made a crucial contribution and has played a decisive role in the cause. of national struggle for the freedom of the country and in laying foundations of the infra-structure in our Constitution. In the post-Independence period, the Congress rule under the leadership of. Pt, Jawaharlal Nehru undoubtedly strengthened all important institutions connected with the parliamentary democracy. His successors, however, lacked this vigour and spirit. Why? This
study as such investigates the policies, culture and performance of the Congress Party in India, the crucial events of the Indian National Movement, Partition Politics, Constitution-making Process, Weaknesses and failures of the Congress Organisation as well as the Congress Government. Factors responsible for the emergence of the Congress Culture in our political system have' also been studied in detail, besides the comparative study of the style of leadership of Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi
and Rajiv Gandhi.'
This book will be of great interest to all sections of people and to scholars and students of political science and other social sciences.
