In this book, in two volumes, an attempt has been made to pose as well as examine key issues in the strategic areas of Banking and Finance in India.
The book is divided into 16 parts and in all contains 42 studies. The chapter on Introduction presents a brief summary of major issues dealt in each study. In short, the volumes examine areas like the national banking scenario (growth and structural problems); the role of the banking sector in India's plans; the dimen sions and issues in rural banking (which has shown remarkable growth since 1969); the resource mobilisation and cash management by banks; the problems faced in controlling borrowed reserves by banks; a critical assessment of bank performance; identifying major changes needed in the banking system, modernisation of banking activities; and experience of bank performance at regional level.
Subsequently follow areas like-issues in financial development; financial institutions and intermediaries; fast growing debt burdens; share of administered prices in inflation; determinants of interest rates; behaviour of capital markets; India's monetary policy and possible reforms. needed; budgetary issues; financial devolution; zero-base budgeting; and the role of floating exchange rates and Exim bank in India's foreign sector.
