The book provides a detailed study of the beginning of Coal Mining in India. It highlights the earliest discoveries of coal in India and its expansion until the latter half of the nineteenth century when a system of railway was established particularly in Chotanagpur and throughout the country. The growth and expansion of railways provided an impetus for further development of coal mining in India.
It highlights the beginning of labour move ment among the coal miners led by Swami Darsanananda and Swami Vishawanand and their success in achieving the goal. This is the rare material which is not easily available. Besides this the book present a detailed account of welfare measures, methods of mining old and new and their hazards and safety measures.
Another special feature of the book is a brief review of the first Public Sector Coal Company in India since its establishment to the present day with an account of nationalisation of coal mines and the present regrouping of coal mines by Coal India Limited.
In this work an attempt has been made to depict an authentic history of the coal mining in India and its development and problems till present day. This important book will be of great use to scholars and students of economics, history and all those interested in the study of coal mining industry in India.
