By: Material type: TextTextPublication details: New Delhi; Metropolian; 1982Description: 552pSubject(s): DDC classification:

Summary: The new 20 Point Programme is a renewed venture to change the face of India, specially rural India. A decade back Dr. Bhattacharya made a study of the problem and brought out his brilliant analysis in his Challenge of Village India, a study in depth. In this book Dr. Bhattacharya in his usual lucid style, has analysed all these 20 Points separately. He traces each point from the Constitution of India, the earlier commitments by our national political parties, national economic plans and also covers the steps taken by our Planning Commission, Government of India, State Governments, through all the Five Year Plans. In his vision and wisdom he has not rejected the Indian classical background. His plea is strongly in favour of a happy mixed marriage of ideas from learned ancient scholars, like Chanakya's Arthasastra, Tirrukurral or sayings of our ancient sages and seers with those of latest modern scientific thinkers, philosophers, scholars and economists. India has definitely made remark able progress both in the farm field and factories. The new Planenvis ages an equal share of this prosperity by all. On the success of this all embracing Plan will stand the success of a silent massive peaceful socio economic revolution. Dr. Bhattacharya discusses all the problems minutely. His scholarly treatment on Farming in Ancient India, Land Reform (comparison with so many countries), Cast System and Socio Economic Erosion in rural India, Rural Indebtedness, Agricultural Growth rate in India, his detailed chapters on "Thirsty soil in a Land of Rivers", Integrated Rural Development Programme, National Rural Employment Programme, Rural Electrification, Family Planning and Health Care and Village and Small Indus tries, give a thorough background, the problems, the reason of their having a priority in the Plan and solution.
