The outbreak of the war has perhaps confirmed the argument of the book that the primary objective of American policy in the region has been the establishment of American dominance; it wants to control a politically volatile region which is of great strategic interest to it. The Gulf region is of course one of the major producers of oil, a country which controls the oil wealth of West Asia will not only be able to determine the price of oil in the world markets but will, provided it is willing, exercise considerable influence on the economic policies of its competitors. The United States in control of Gulf oil could gain an unfair advantage over Germany and Japan; it is not merely access but control that matters.
This book attempts to study the implications of the Gorbachevian revolution and the ending of the cold war on the politics of West Asia.
