As the general title of the five-volume set, BOEINGS AND BULLOCK-CARTS, suggests, the pervading theme is the change and continuity in the modernizing Indian society, and how the past persists in the midst of the present vast économic and technological development. These volumes explore how both in the past as also in the present, the traditional Indian civilization and culture have displayed a unique resilience for survival amidst most challenging circumstances.
These volumes afford us a clearer picture of issues confronting Indian society today and of the resourcefulness it has to grapple with them on the eve of the 21st century. Another remarkable feature of these five volumes is that although the treatment of the topics is scholarly, the language employed by the distinguished contributors is not unduly loaded with jargons and abstract theorizings. Generally, it is clear, persuasive, factual and illustrative. This is volume five of the series. It contains essays which are linked to the entire series as also constitute a volume complete in itself. It offers some extraordinarily perceptive insights into some of the basic issues which confront the makers of modern India today.
