The primary purpose of this study is to make available a comprehensive and handy volume on the subject which, at the same time, is sympa thetic and intellectually objective, unaffected by ideological, national and other prejudices. So much of the writings of the subject are either propagandist, in favour or against, Nonalignment and the Nonaligned Movement (NAM) that an objective and critical study is urgently called for-now that the Policy and Movement of Nonalignment have become new factors in the conduct of international relations.
The volume traces the origins, and the meaning of nonalignment, and the reasons why 102 states have opted for it. It analyses the nature and functioning of the NAM-its membership and the proposed new World Order it is seeking to promote. It then deals with the relations of the nonaligned states with the Power blocs, and their roles in the United Nations. Finally, it makes, in two chapters, a lengthy critique of the Policy and the Movement.
The volume seeks to make a detailed, com prehensive and up-to-date study on the subject. It is based on an extensive study and analysis of the documents of the eight nonaligned Summit (and some forty other) conferences. It also critically examines and comments on the views expressed by writers and statesmen, in the voluminous primary and secondary sources.
