The days of capitalism are numbered. Our dynamic, materialist, oxpansionist business civilization will not survive the twenty-first century, says Robert L Heilbroner in this thoughtful, lively and certainly thought provoking book
Continuous expansion, which lies at the root of capitalism's social and economic structure, will become ever more difficult. To regulate the disruption that this will cause, the state will become involved in the guidance and control of he economy to a far greater extent, until the point is reached when it directs all economic activity. At the same time, the values that have kept business civilization healthy and expansive will become a liability. the spirit will have gone out of capitalism.
