The year 1988 was marked by numerous splits and mergers in the opposition camp. In 1987, after the death of Chaudhry Charan Singh the Lok Dal had split into two-one led by Shri Ajit Singh known as Lok Dal (A) and the other led by Shri H.N. Bahuguna known as Lok Dal (B). In 1988, the Lok Dal (A) merged into the Janata Party. On the other hand Lok Dal (B) was faced with yet another split when a very powerful group, led by Shri Devi Lal, Chief Minister of Haryana, merged with the Janata Dal which had come into being as a result of the merger of several parties.
On the national stage, the Janata Dal, CPI, CPI (M), Telegu Desam Party, BJP, DMK and Congress (S) formed a National Front to make a combined effort for the removal of the Congress (I) Government at the centre.
