Traditional economic and industrial approaches are often incompatible with sustainable environmental development. A basic question today, therefore is not whether to choose between development and environment. It is how to select patterns of development that improve the quality of the environment. Inter national economic co-operation is vital in this context. What is required is a more integrated approach towards evolving an international environmental system which responds ade quately to the development needs of develop ing countries in the context of growing environ. mental despoliation.
This collection in two volumes is a multi disciplinary investigation into various aspects of pressing environmental problems facing India at this time. It also provides a comprehensive analysis of the ecological situation in the world today and its future taking into account socio economic development as well as scientific and technological progress. Making wide use of data from various social and pure sciences, the contributors analyse the trends of the eco logical situation and its future development.. Such an approach ensures a thorough analysis of the environmental issues and proves that a solution can be found only by the joint efforts of both developed and developing countries.
This collection stresses the necessity of according priority action programmes to integrating population, environment and development factors, taking fully into consi deration the need for national utilisation of natural resources and protection of the physical environment.
