Repression and resistance in India

A sequel to the earlier publication, Violation of Democratic Rights in India, this book gives a further record of the violations of human rights in India. In the earlier book an attempt was made to unfold in a panoramic manner the devices adopted by the government to regulate, control and repress the poorer sections of the people against the backdrop of the rights given in the Constitution of India and in the Universal Decla ration of Human Rights. It also attempted to disclose how the elementary aspirations and demands of the economically exploited classes and socially, politically, and culturally oppressed sections of the people are nullified by adopting more and more sophisticated techniques of repression.

The documents included in this volume reveal various methods by which violation of human rights are perpetrated on the vast masses of the Indian people. The documents point out how different sections of the people are experiencing humiliations, harassment, oppression and ex ploitation in independent India where the govern ing classes propagate that they are running a welfare state. They also show how the State and its executive, legislative and even judicial arms can create conditions where human rights are denied to Indian citizens. In order to highlight such violations the editor has chosen in this volume different sections of downtrodden people namely working classes, rural poor, adivasis and dalits. The continuous oppressions over the decades against these sections of the people has inevitably led to a hopeless situation for these people. But they have now started asserting themselves and are resisting the oppressors. This volume describes the struggle made by these people.
