I began this monograph seven years ago. I was then an in-patient in the Willingdon Hospital, New Delhi, recouping my health after a minor operation. I had plenty of time at my disposal to read and contemplate. No doubt, there were many visitors but their time was restricted. Jail-life too, as a freedom fighter, did help me a good deal to improve myself all-round. Perhaps, this is why we are told that sweet are the uses of adversity.
One day a group of Balmikis from Delhi came to see me. During the course of our 'chit-chat', one of them narrated an incident that took place in the Bhangi colony. It was about Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru shedding his precious tears when he saw the miserable plight of Delhi untouchables. What was the matter? How did it happen? Naturally I enquired of him in all eagerness. He told me the full story in minute details:
