Perhaps for the first time since Independence a popular movement has tended to develop into a radical na tional and social force. This is the peasant movement of today which is the subject of this book. Never be fore in modern history have the pea sants risen on such a scale on their own initiative. This strengthens those modes of thought and practice which attempt to transcend modernity.
In line with such thinking, this book narrates the peasants movements of Maharashtra, Karnataka, Punjab and Tamil Nadu in some detail and tries to capture some new ways of thinking which have begun to take shape with this movement. Specific attempt is made to relate new ideas in the realms of history, economics, politics and science exhibiting and initiating new cognitive paradigms.
Transcending modernity is a new kind of theoretical focus, which, when discussed in the substantial background of a popular movement, should be of interest both to the academic and the activist.
