Summary: The environment is an unexplored area as far as the economist, particularly the economist in India, is concerned. The economics of wasteland development within the environmental area is emerging as a specialized sub-field. Wastelands are one of the expressions of the degraded and damaged environment. Their extent is growing, the reasons for which are many. What is needed first is knowledge about the startling facts on wastelands - the aim of this monograph. This is the third publication in the series, Economics and the Environment, the first and the second being Economics of Environment and Some Economic Issues in the Rural Energy-Environment Conflict, respectively. The contributors to the book have attempted to formulate a policy to stop the spread of wastelands and rejuvenate and rehabilitate the existing over half of the land area of the country which is classed as wasteland.
