Summary: THE FACULTY at this Institute has been interested in the study of the elite for quite some time. Research work has been completed on the Scheduled Caste Elite, Tribal Elite and Muslim Elite. It was in the fitness of things, therefore, that the Institute organized a seminar on the study of the elite with particular reference to their role in development. The main objective of the seminar was to bring out the salient features of elite in different social settings and then explore their real nature, promise and achievement. In the course of this explora tion, we came across a number of gaps in elite studies. Shri J.P. Naik, the then Member-Secretary of the ICSSR showed keen interest in this endeavour and provided part of the funds with which it was possible to host the seminar. We owe a deep debt of gratitude to him. Thanks are also due to the contributors of this volume, most of whom took pains to attend the seminar and participate in the discussions. We are grateful to the Editor, Indian Journal of Political Science, for allowing us to reprint Dr L.N. Sharma's article which appeared in the January-March, 1977 issue of that Journal. We are deeply obliged to Shri Naurang Rai and Mrs. Suhasini Ramaswamy of Concept Publishing Company for seeing the book through the press quickly.
