The year 1986 witnessed impor tant political developments and a marked thrust of the Congress Government at the centre to wards achieving higher goals following the Mizoram, Assam and Punjab Accords. The Gov ernment initiated a New Econo mic Policy and a New Education Policy and took positive steps to help solve the problems of Sri Lankan Tamils. It also put at rest the controversy created by the Supreme Court verdict in the Shah Bano case by passing the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Divorce) Bill 1986.
However the serious unrest in Punjab and on Gorkhaland issue continued. Serious drought situation and the consequent price hikes, South Africa and arming of Pakistan by the United States are some of the other issues which dominated the Indian political arena during the year.
