Summary: This book, a compilation of papers presented in the National Level Workshop on Arunachal Pradesh: Environmental Planning and Sustainable Development Opportunities and Challenges is an attempt to update the available information on Arunachal Pradesh and finally what provides Arunachal Pradesh with so much of resilence and robustness as a strategically volatile state. Sixty contributions are arranged in eight sections: I : Arunachal Pradesh : an overview deals with general profile i.e. population growth, literacy rate, occupational structure, ethnic composition, essential social structure and major tribes. Physiographic profile of the State describes physiography, geology and drainage pattern and link it up with the basin wise developmental activities. The vast corpus of Arunachal culture has been a mature, complex and explicit phenomenon in its evolution. Many of these rich and diverse bodies of cultural resources are yet to be reinterpreted. II : Physical and biological resources section deals various issues linked with sustainable land use development, based on a value system of the local communities. Problem and prospects of natural resources management in Arunachal Pradesh was critically evaluated in this section. This section also focussed on prioritize the developmental needs of various natural resources through a partnership between communities, experts and the State Government officials and an urgent need to control the shifting cultivation practices. III : The biodiversity and protected area network section thoroughly provides an overview of the plant and animal diversity along with the perceived threats, and possible conservation strategies for the protection of flora and fauna. Importance of NTFPs and medicinal plants for the speedy economic development of the State is also thoroughly described. Possible potential of bamboo cultivation and its economic value has been also focused in this section.
