Summary: This is a book about contemporary political theory. An examination of the philosophy and politics of Professor Michael Oakeshott hailed by many as the most profound and original political thinker that England has produced in the twentieth century, it's argument ranges over a wide field. In his thoughtful, well-argued, and exceptionally well-documented study, the author not only discusses scepticism in political theory as represented by Oakeshott's attack on rationalism but also deals with the other important themes of academic political thought in the west today. And these include both the traditional varieties of conservative, liberal and socialist political theory and the more topical developments such as the decline of political theory, the end of ideo logy', 'post-liberal-democratic theory, and the behavioral science of politics', etc. 2 Broader conclusions are drawn from the assembled evidence and these are both solid and interestingly presented. The author's non-conformist approach here should be of help to those in search of a more critical, and critically constructive, orientation in their study of the subject. The author in fact writes from a frankly Marxist stand-point. This not only gives a critical edge, as also consistency, to his argument but also provides the book with its other basic theme, namely, the validity and relevance of Marxism today. It is hoped that this book will be of value both to those specially interested in the recent development of western political theory and to those concerned with wider issues of contemporary life and thought.
