This book examines the historical perceptions, and the organisational methods which have shaped and provide the rationale for India's current mountain operational practices. The author has reviewed the existing open-source literature on mountain war- fighting by independent India, from the India- Pakistan Kashmir war of 1947-48 right up to the India-Pakistan Kargil border war of 1999. He has also discussed at length with retired officers with experience of actual mountain warfare and of defensive mountain deployments, and drawn on his own mountain experience as a former infantry officer to review and analyse India's mountain warfare experience.
