Summary: Right to Information is a fundamental human right, crucial to human development, and a prerequisite for the realisation of other rights. There is a strong global trend towards greater recognition of RTI. In 2016, UNESCO adopted a resolution declaring '28 September of every year as International Day for Universal Access to Information". The Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) Target 16.10 requires ensuring public access to information and protect fundamental freedoms, in accordance with national legislation and International agreements. UNESCO argues that advancing SDG 16 Target 10 on public access to information can nourish progress on all SDGs. So far over 120 countries have enacted freedom of Information laws.
