Along with social activism and the higher judiciary, the press has emerged as a major political arena for public discussion and institutional accountability. Successive governments have charged the press of monopolism, disrupting 'law and order' and being un-'committed' to decreed developmental goals. On its part, the press, which varies in size, quality and integrity self.
