Summary: It is gratifying to note that this book continues to be well received and widely used by gra duate students, professional economists and candidates for various competitive examinations all over India and also abroad. All chapters in this revised edition have been rewritten incorporating the recommenda tions of the Sixth Five-Year Plan; findings of surveys and recommendations of various com mittees appointed by official and private research organisations on various economic issues. Several new chapters- Energy Issues, Regional Inequalities, Technology in Agriculture, In come Distribution and Poverty, Marketing and Economic Development, Economics of Education-have been added in view of their importance in the current economic thinking in the country. The statistics have been updated, and further effort has been made to reduce variations in different chapters on coverage of material, methods of analysis and writing styles. It is sincerely hoped that this modest attempt on the part of some "Indian economists based abroad" will continue to be valuable to "the students of India" to whom this book is dedicated.
