Summary: Some say IT Was written in the stars, but- whatever the reason The Family, Society, and the Individual has been both criticized and praised. Fortunately, praise has far outweighed criticism, and some 700 colleges and universities have now used the book. Moreover, a large number of teachers and students at these institutions have taken the time to write to me, and I appreciate their many kind words. In keeping with the trend of the times, a number of readers felt that more space should be devoted to the role of women. Others believed that the time was ripe for an exploration of alternatives to marriage. Accordingly, new chapters or sections dealing with women's liberation and alternative life styles have been added. Other major changes have also been made; in fact, it would not be much exaggeration to say that it is change that characterizes this new edition. The trick, of course, has been to incorporate the new material without altering the readability and flow of the basic book.
