Summary: A survey of the banking scene today indicates that our banking system has come a long way during the last two decades or so. There has been a significant increase in its geographical and functional coverage which has resulted in substantial improvement in the extension of our banking facilities in poorly banked states and in rural areas of the country. All these developments have been in the desired direction. As we move ahead, there will have to be greater refinement in policies, adjustment in priorities, increasing attention to improving the impact of our policies and programmes. This book contains views of top level bankers and academicians on the role of bank ing which it is expected to play in future. The focus of this book is on the weaknesses and deficiencies we have developed in the process of development, where we have to go in the coming decades and what stresses and strains we are likely to encounter in the process of future growth. This book will be of interest and use to all scholars, students of Commerce and Economics, and a guide for the policy-maker concerning banking development in the country.
