Summary: The expert group of the United Nations Centre for Regional Development was of the opinion that "adequate research has not been done on various aspects of rural industrial isation and its role in regional and national development. Much of the relevant literature is of a technical nature: the Social Scientists have not taken enough interest thereby leaving considerable gaps in knowledge." The present micro-level study is an attempt at filling the above gaps. The study, based on fieldwork, reveals that in spite of planned development efforts, rural industries continue to be an insignificant and inefficient activity in the rural areas The dynamic nature of industrialisation efforts of the country has had no influence on them. It is hoped the study will provide new insights for future action for rapid develop ment and thereby help in realising the dream of a developed India at the dawn of the 21st century.
