There has been growing aware ness throughout the 1980's that maintaining the quality of environment and improving the quality of life and, thereby, achieving a rational socio spatial balance in human opportuni ties are interlinked phenomena. A consensus seems to emerge that development and environment, like growth and redistribution, are closely interrelated and, therefore, they must be viewed as simultaneous and not as sequential processes. A humanistic focus must also be an ecosystematic focus. Studies in Environment and Development is an endeavour in this direction.
The book contains altogether fifteen contributions, six of these have been reprinted. The papers included in this volume deal with a wide spectrum of topics such as growth and development, economic ecology, conservation and develop ment, ecodevelopment, ecology technology and rura! habitat trans formation, environmental perspective on rural and urban habitat, remote sensing in environmental manage ment and monitoring, rural energy. agricultural biotechnology and en vironment, urbanisation in the LDC's, environmental education, integrated strategy for ecologically sustainable development, and techniques of environmental impact evaluation. Almost all the papers are rich in conceptual underpinnings.
The book would be useful to research workers, programme administrators and planners interes tod in the process of ecologically sustainable developmental growth.
