This book examines the American attitude towards India's freedom struggle and deals with US policy towards India during the Truman, Eisenhower and Kennedy Administrations. It highlights the role of personality and discusses how interaction between two charismatic leaders Jawaharlal Nehru and John F. Kennedy gave a new direction to Indo-US relations.
The study analyses Indo-US differences on various political issues, such as the Kashmir problem and the liberation of Goa, and examines how increase in US aid to India by the Kennedy Administration and the extension of military assistance in the wake of the Sino Indian War of 1962 led to a significant improvement in Indo-US relations. It also discusses the impact of the Korean War, the Japanese Peace Treaty, the Suez Canal issue, the Hungarian and the Berlin crises, and the problem of Laos and Vietnam on relations between the two countries.
This book should prove useful to all scholars and students of political science, international politics, South Asian studies and US foreign policy.
