Summary: Global economic goals over the next several decades can be met with about the same level of global energy use as today. This finding one of the main features of this book is in sharp contrast to conventional energy analyses that call for a doubting or tripling of global energy requirements over this period. Conventional projections also imply that the scarcity of affordable energy would significantly constrain development and that the resulting overdependence on fossil fuels and nuclear power would give rise to formidable environmental and security problems. The book shows that it is feasible to identify long range global energy strategies in which energy demand is sufficiently low that considerable flexibility is gained in providing energy supplies. It therefore becomes to avoid overdependence on the more troublesome supply options and to begin a transition to renewable energy sources.
