The motivation for this work initially came from the discussions on the theme of Energy in one of the Annual Conferences of Indian Economic Association held at Pune in 1980. Energy has become an important subject of controversy on account of prevailing recession in the world economy and the raising of oil prices in the second round in 1979 by the OPSEC countries.
The non-conventional sources of energy like solar, biogas, social forestry etc. were intensively explored to meet the growing energy crisis in the world economy in general and in the developing economics in particular. The problem of finding ways of financing the projects for development of various energy sources for the developing economies was a matter of concern in the international forums.
