Summary: Socio-economic development of rural areas is of crucial significance in the framework of integrated growth and social justice. To achieve this, new schemes of integrated rural deve lopment have been designed to pro vide employment through productive programmes in the rural areas and to make the rural poor to rise above the poverty line status. The book points out the gaps and inconsistencies in the implementation of the programmes, with special refe rence to the selection of beneficiaries, sanction of loans, disbursement of loan assets, the adjustment of subsi dies, and the repayment of loans. The unit of analysis in the present study was the IRD beneficiaries, and it is their expectations, perceptions, attitu des and predicaments which have been analysed. The book clearly explains the nature and extent of the involvement of the rural poor in their own upliftment, through the IRD Programme and the measures taken by the socialised banks. The book critically examines the national policies and programmes launched by the Government to help the rural poor in the context of the newly emerging class structure and suggest measures for the alternative strategy for the upliftment of the rural poor.
