Summary: The present book deals with the problems of implementation of rural employment programmes in India. Beginning in the early sixties, these programmes have become a major component of India's strategy for poverty alleviation. The achievements from these programmes, however, leave much to be desired. As the feedback confirms, India has been a poor implementor of its plans and programmes. Why is there so much gap between the objectives of the rural employment programmes and their eventual outcomes? This book is an attempt to analyse this question more comprehensively and suggests remedial action on a broad front.
