Summary: This is a comprehensive study on a not so well-known South Indian financial intermediary. Nidhis have been functioning in South India, in particular Tamil Nadu, for over a century. They have a fairly good record of work and have scope for further usefulness in the task of mobilising resources and channelling them, in particular to serve the needs of the smaller income groups, especi ally in the urban areas. After describing the character istics and the functioning of Nidhis, there is a detailed dis cussion of their defects and defi ciencies and the directions in which they ought to be reform ed, through both self-regulation and Governmental regulation.
