In this book I have not attempted to discuss anything but Sartre's philosophy. Both in the field of philosophy and in that of literature Sartre has written what would represent a whole life's work for a normal man, and though his work is closely integrated, it seems to me that the first task of a commentator on it is to select. It is easy for the reader to get lost in the formidable number of words that he has written. Moreover, to understand Sartre's contributions to literature it is absolutely necessary to have some grasp of his philosophical commitments. So this study may be taken as an introduction to the whole of Sartre's work.
