Summary: The emergence of two powerful states and opposite political systems in India and China have made the entire Himalayan Region alive. Nepal occupies a vital position in the Himalayas and skirts along the most undefended frontier of India. The Indo-Nepalese relations pro vide an interesting study of the working of the British imperialism in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. But few works give a comprehensive and unbiased account of the Nepales history and socio political institutions. This is the first work, based on entirely original sources, in which a comprehensive account of the Indo Nepalese relations during the most important period (1816-77) of the nineteenth century has been given. Not only new facts have been brought to light, a new interpretation has also been given to them by emphasising the importance of economic, strategic and socio-political factors, which had governed the relations between the two countries.
