Asian - African conference

From mid-1954 until mid-1955 the author traveled and carried on research in Indonesia and in other parts of southern Asia under the auspices of the Cornell Southeast Asia Program. He was in Indonesia at the time of the Asian-African Conference, where he was fortunate enough to be accorded press status enabling him to attend its open meetings and to talk with the delegates. Following the Conference, several Indonesian leaders who had held key positions in planning and conducting the Conference gave considerable time to discussing with him the events at Bandung and the developments which led up to them. Thereafter the author spent approximately a month in May and June 1955 in New Delhi, Rangoon, Karachi, and Cairo, where a number of Asian and African leaders, most of them dele gates to Bandung, discussed with him their views of the Conference and its background. He wishes to acknowledge his appreciation to all of these people for their helpfulness and their generosity in giving him their time. While in reaching his conclusions the author bene fited from his talks with all of them, he wishes to make clear that these conclusions are his own. None of the data here presented, nor any of the interpretations and conclusions offered, represent the views of any one of these individuals; all are based upon the totality of the research which went into this study, and the author alone is responsible for them.
