This book, a collection of various studies presented in a seminar, is the first attempt to examine the new farmers' movement taking shape in several States of India. Intelligentia in general and the social scientists in particular, are yet to take a serious view of this phenomenon which is engendering a fresh radical re-exami nation of the prevalent theory and conceptual categories which are wholely modern Western in content as well as origin.
The first two parts on 'accounts' and 'perspectives', made up of various studies by thinker activists and leaders of the movement, other than describing the movement in some detail, bring into focus the new approach that the country is primarily divided into two parts, 'Bharat' and 'India', the cause of the poverty of rural people being outside the rural society. Part III has a few studies by social scientists taking a critical view of the movement. Part IV relating to science and technology captures the essence of some entirely new work on 'alternative science' and attempts to relate such work with the on-going peasant movement.
