Child development and socialisation

The scientific study of socialisation process is quite recent in Social anthropology and Socio logy. It gained popularity in India only after the 1967 Conference of the Association of Social Anthropologists. The socialisation studies of different communities particularly of the simpler and isolated societies have attracted the attention of social anthropologists of several countries.

In this book, the learned author has presented a work on child socialisation in a North Indian rural set up. He has at length analysed the process of child socialisation in the Sikligars, the Bazigars and the Jat Sikhs living in the same village. The author has brought out the essential features of the child socialisation pro cesses in the multi-cultural society.

This book focuses on an introduction child hood and child socialisation in the first chapter. A review highlights the issues relating to child socialisation. In the second chapter, the theme, the setting, the hypothesis and methodology involved have been discussed. In the next chapter, the world of the Sikligars and their child socialisation have been examined. The fourth chapter contains the details of Bazigar child rearing. The way of living and socialisa tion is the theme of chapter five. The sixth chapter is a comparative analysis of child rear ing among the three communities. The summ ing up has been made in the concluding chapter.

This book is a welcome addition to disciplines of Anthropology, Sociology, Education and allied disciplines, particularly for the workers in socialisation of child-rearing studies.
