Summary: This book has attempted to analyse the role of agriculture in economic development in theoretical framework as well as to make a com prehensive study of the role assigned to agricultural development in the Indian Five Years Plans. In this broad framework its focus lies on the study of agricultural development during the Five Year Plans and its achievements and failures. The development of agriculture depends on the expansion of infrastructural facilities such as irrigation, use of fertilizers and scientific implements as well as HYV seeds. Since the latest technology of agricultural development consists of a judicious use of water HYV seeds and ferti lizers. Apart from studying the economics of the package progromme of agricultural development begun during the Third Five Year Plan, it has gone into a detail analysis of the intensive Agricultural Area Pro gramme as implemented in Bihar and its achievements and failures. It has also attempted a compara tive analysis of the rates of the agricultural growth in different States of the country and highlighted the reasons for the slow growth rates in Bihar agricultural which have I created vast imbalances in regional agricultural country.
