Summary: "The Farmers' Societies and Agricultural Development-An Empiri cal Study", deals with innovative credit-cum-service organisations at the grass root level of the economy. Farmers' Service Societies were con ceived by National Commission on Agriculture in 1973. Since 1973-74, thousands of FSS have been organised in different parts of the country. Karnataka is the first State to try out this novel experiment among the States in realm of rural credit. Present study is the result of extensive field survey of the author. It pertains to the review of the work ing of FSS at the National level in general and an indepth study of selected sample societies and their impact on the beneficiaries vis-a-vis non beneficiaries in the Bellary dis trict. This study focuses the on performance of the FSS in the district of Karnataka State, which are sponso red by the different banks viz. Tungabhadra Gramin Bank, Bellary, BDCC Bank, Hospet and SBI, ADB Branch, Bellary. The success of sam ple societies are varied according to the rate of involvement of the sponso ring bank. The study reveals many interesting conclusions and several suggestions for the future growth, useful for students The book is of agricultural economics, researchers, Universities and policy makers as well.
