Social Movemen ts for Development comprises of the papers presented in a seminar on the same theme organised by the Department of Sociology, Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi. It was an inter-disciplinary venture in which the learned partici- pants deliberated over the crucial issues involved in social movements in context of development in India. The papers on conceptual and theoretical issues have analysed the subject matters from an interdisciplinary approach. The empirical papers on
various forms of movements have demonstrated the facts of acceptance or resistance to the developmental process. All the papers of the volume are conceptually precise and methodologically sound. It is a valuable contribution to the emerging field of
social movements and collective action. The volume, the first of its kind, is of emense value to the students of social science, social workers and general readers.
