The book is on group conflict and accommoda-
tion. The formation of linguistic states coupled
with the democratization of political institution
have politicized the ethnicity and created a
conflict-situation between the linguistic majority
and minority groups.
Different states haveattempted to resolve such conflicts in different
ways.
Three states of Eastern India, West Bengal,
Assam and Tripura, have been selected for
case studies. West Bengal provides a typical
example of pluralistic pattern, Assam evinces
a forcible assimilative pattern and Tripura a
irustration-aggression pattern.
The causes
the different patterns of relationship in
diferent states have been studied in the back-
ground of their respective historical, economic
and demographic situations. In the concluding
chapter the author suggests ways and means
to resolve these conflicts in the mosaic of
state life.
