Summary: The book is on group conflict and accommoda- tion. The formation of linguistic states coupled with the democratization of political institution have politicized the ethnicity and created a conflict-situation between the linguistic majority and minority groups. Different states haveattempted to resolve such conflicts in different ways. Three states of Eastern India, West Bengal, Assam and Tripura, have been selected for case studies. West Bengal provides a typical example of pluralistic pattern, Assam evinces a forcible assimilative pattern and Tripura a irustration-aggression pattern. The causes the different patterns of relationship in diferent states have been studied in the back- ground of their respective historical, economic and demographic situations. In the concluding chapter the author suggests ways and means to resolve these conflicts in the mosaic of state life.
