Summary: An invaluable research and reference source book for anyone study ing elections to the Indian Parliament since the country attained in dependence. The book brings together in one volume electoral statistics relating to the eight Lok Sabha elections, and all the bye elections, held during the period 1952-85. Reliable and accurate electoral statistics are needed at all levels to facilitate quantitative analyses of Indian elections. This information is at present available only in the various reports that the Election Commission publishes after each election. This book collates all the relevant information available in these reports and presents them in a uniform format so as to allow valid comparative analyses of election results. The constituency results have been checked for errors and omissions and the state and national aggregates have been arrived at by adding the corrected results. The authors have provided data on voter turnout; the vote and seat shares of political parties; and the party affiliations of the candidates. Since constituencies remain unaltered between the decennial censuses, the authors have presented detailed constituency results for pairs of elections (except for the 1952 and 1984 elections). This allows the user to compare the performance of parties and candidates at the constituency level. The Handbook is the result of a painstaking, long-term effort and the data contained in it have been presented in the most convenient form. All institutions and re searchers concerned with elections will welcome this book.
