Summary: In December 1980 a number of scholars came together under the auspices of the Centre of South Asian Studies at the London School of Oriental and African Studien. to discuss the external dimension in rural South Asia. linkages between localities and the wider world. The scholars were drawn from Britain, Europe, India, New Zealand and the United States. A preliminary meeting had also been held in June 1980. Some of the papers given on these occasiona bore particularly on the ques son of economic development and are published as a companion volume in this series, entitled Fural south Ale Link, Change and development. Some of the otter papers, all of the historical in emphasis and relating to the period or the impact of britian rule, have been included in the present volume. I have in both cases added introductory essays. The title of this volume is not intended to imply pretensions of comprehensiveness.
