Summary: The need for a national wage policy for the development of the country and for raising the standard of living of the people has been under the consideration of the Government for quite some time. Recently a committee of 11 State Labour Ministers has been set up to go into the modalities of a national wage policy. All major industrial disputes in the country arise out of issues relating to wages. If only these problems are handled in a more scientific manner and on the basis of productivity and distributive justice there would be peace on the labour front. Dr. A.N. Mathur has in this timely and significant book analysed, discussed and raised issues which deserve attention from all those connected with the question of wages. The book describes the process of wage determination in industrial organisations in India. The analysis is based on the actual experiences of leading industrial organisations researched by the author and covers the range of issues related to the dynamics of wages which concern industrial managers, trade union leaders, government conciliators, adjudicators, arbitrators, employees, employers and policy makers. The spectrum of facts and opinions has been exhaustively covered relating to the actual practices with wage concepts and theories in a field where practices are ahead of documented experience. Wage patterns of yester-years have been analysed and future prospects and choices crystallised. Comparisons of experiences in India and abroad bring out the common themes that emerge and significant relationships that exist between different factors influencing wage determination.
