This study, "Industrialization and Social Change", was sponsored by the Research Programmes Committee of the Planning Commission, Government of India, and financed by a grant by it. The design for the project was prepared by the late Prof. Kali Prasad.
The draft questionnaire and the interview schedule were prepared and pre-tested on a small sample in Faridabad, Ghaziabad and Milakh Chakarpur, the places selected for study.
Unfortunately, in the middle of the work Prof. Kali Prasad passed away and the Research Council for Cultural Studies asked me to take charge of the project.
Over and above the questionnaire and the interview schedule an attempt was made to identify the 'modal personality of the persons living in the pre-industrial, partially-industrial and industrial areas by using a projective technique based on T.A.T. pictures specially designed for the purpose. Dr. E.S.K. Nayar and Sri K.G. Agrawal, both with considerable experience in the use and interpretation of T.A.T., were requested to go through the protocols and analyse the data. I am grateful to them. Since this study was conducted on a small sub-sample, the results have only a suggestive value; so the report of this work is given in Appendix-C.
