The process of planning for develop ment has been in operation in India since 1951. Attainment of balanced regional development has been one of the central objectives of its deve lopment planning. The realisation of this objective in the actual life of the country very much depends on the spatial process and pattern of growth and change that result from theoperational process of planning in the country.
Various studies contained in this volume, in some form or the other, throw light on the spatial process and pattern of growth and changes that have taken place in the Indian economy and in its different sectors over a period of time since 1951. These studies which have been contributed by eminent scholars and administrators are grou ped in five parts, dealt with the follo wing: (a) nature and trend of regi onal income inequalities. (b) regional structure of development and growth (c) regional dynamics of agricultural development and rural poverty. (d) regional industrial disparities and (e) regional aspects of work force. labour force and participation in all cases, the state is taken to be an unit of analysis,
An overview of the papers and their findings reflect two things: firstly, the process of regional growth and change persists to be uneven; and secondly, this process of growth and change corresponds to or arises from the unevenness existing in the regional structure of development Hence differences in regional strug ture of development should be pro gressively redressed or overcome. On the whole, the volume is of ana lytical value for academics and researchers and of policy use for those who are engaged in the taak of policy making and administration
