This book portrays the framework within which the economic activities of a society are constructed. Much of its emphasis is on analysis and the first four chapters look at the nature of economics, the national output and economic decision-making in market and in centrally planned economies. The focus of interest then becomes the 'mixed" economy of the UK. The public and private sectors of the economy are surveyed, and a series of vital issues such as the reasons for the growth in the public sector and the functions of the City", are considered. The final chapter looks at the scope and limits of government policy, concentrating particularly on the distribution of income and wealth, policy on unemployment and inflation, and the problem of the 'social balance-how large should the public sector be? This book forms part of the Longman Social Structure of Modern Britain series which offers an analysis of basic demographic, ideological and structural features of British society.
