Indians in Malaysia and Singapore.

In both Malaysia and Singapore, Indians today constitute the third largest ethnic group next to the Malays and the Chinese. In both countries they exist as a distinct and iden tifiable community, and will continue to do so for some time, in view of the historical circumstances that led to their settlement, and the nature of the present social and politi cal organization of Malaysia and Singapore.

Of the immigrant communities in Malaysia and Singa pore, the Chinese have been widely studied and written about but the story of the Indians is relatively less known, much less the nature, characteristics, and evolution of In dian society in these countries. This book attempts to pro vide an overall study of the Malayan Indian community from the middle of the nineteenth century and is based on a wide variety of sources: governmental records, publica tions of societies and of educational and religious institu tions, and the accumulated memory of the people.

In this revised edition, a chapter is added, discussing the Indian communities in contemporary Malaysia and Singa pore.
