Summary: Poverty has many faces, facets and phases. In its myriad forms, it has defied any single solution. It still is one of the acute problem facing the country to-day. The study focuses on various programme undertaken by Govt. inregard to poverty, their impact on poor, what the poor themselves think and feel and approaches of those concerned with uplift. Analyses the efforts of various national, international and voluntary organisation to help the poor. Presents in a meaningful manner, the relationship poverty has with health, education, literacy. nutritional levels. urbanisation and population. Lastly, the authors think that poverty to prosperity is possible if we change our attitudes, improve average charactor and plan realistically-plan for double the population (as we are going to be a billion in near future) and plan for food, shelter, clothing and literacy in that order. The nine cartoons by Sri K. P. Ramesh Rao are a treat. This adoritly handled study. well written, factually supported by author relative data, will invoke interest in researchers, administrators, planners, and all those engaged in uplift of weaker sections as well as discerning readership,
