Summary: The problems of population, poverty and settlements are the greatest problems, which the world confronts today. In developing countries, like India the main concern of national planning agencies is related to the various facets of population and settlements. The study of population and settlements problems through various perspectives so as to ultimately find a balanced settlements on national level is of paramount importance and has evoked interest in different scientists and academicians. In this book, Dr. Alok Kumar Singh pre sents for the first time a lucid analysis of population and settlement of Mirzapur Distt., a relatively less accessibble and remoter hill tribal tract of Utter Pradesh. The study has been divided in seven chapters. Chapter I gives brief introduc tion of area. Chapter II deals with the environmental setting of population of settle ment. Chapter III presents a detailed account of the histogensis settlements and shows succesive periods of evolution. Chapter IV is devoted to various aspects of population. Chapter V analyses the rural population and rural settlements character istics. Chapter VI analyses the urban population and settlements characteristics. In the final chapter, the author has examin ed the problems of the district, and sugges ted prespective planning for future and development plans has been estimated till AD 2001. This book provides a new dimension in comprehensive planning especially for back ward but speedily growing Indian economy. It is illustrated by several maps and good photographs and also presents a generalized model for helping scholars in formulating planning structure and implementing developments plans.
